Palmanova

Venetian Works of Defence

Behind the star shape of the fortress of Palmanova lies the ambitious project of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. They founded the city in 1593 as a bulwark against Ottoman expansion and expression of the ideal city of the Renaissance. For these merits, in 2017, Palmanova was recognized by UNESCO within the transnational site of the “Venetian Defence Works between the 16th and 17th centuries: Stato da Terra – western Stato da mare *“. The visit of the city-fortress allows you to appreciate the evolution of the military architecture of the Venetian and Napoleonic eras, through imposing Baroque architecture, the arrangements of galleries and loggias, the water network of the moat system and waterfalls, the large parade ground and the building machines rebuilt based on the original drawings. Around the fortress, now surrounded by greenery, a network of ring paths invites citizens and visitors to pleasant walks and excursions by bike or horseback.
